If you're looking to purchase a waterproof blanket, you need to consider a couple of things before spending your money. Doing so will cut down the time you need to look at the many blankets available and will allow you to get the best value out of your money.
Usage
The most important aspect to factor in: what will you use the blanket for? Are you looking for a waterproof picnic blanket, a blanket for your dog or are you going out camping and hiking for a long period of time? Some waterproof blankets are specifically made to cover yourself. Which means they will have soft outer layers on both sides while other blankets are made for activities such as a picnic, for people to sit on. Those blankets will have a waterproof layer on the bottom side. Waterproof blankets made for camping will often be heavier as they require more durable and warmer materials, such as fleece or down.
So factor in what you will use the blanket for as it will ultimately have an impact on the materials and overall structure of the waterproof blanket.
Thickness
Closely related to the previous point, keep in mind how thick the blanket has to be. If you want to use a picnic blanket on more uneven or harder underground then the fabric of the blanket needs to be thicker and will often have a couple more layers. The same applies for other types of waterproof blankets, especially if you're looking at waterproof camping blankets.
The thickness of a blanket will have an impact on the weight and how much space the blanket occupies. These attributes are important to keep in mind if you're looking to buy a blanket for camping or hiking because you will be carrying that weight with you the whole trip. It also means the blanket will be harder to fold, the thicker it gets.
Size
You need to know how big the blanket has to be. A picnic with the whole family and kids will have to be bigger than a blanket you're bringing outdoors with you to read a book by yourself. This matters for any other situation where you can have different sizes (for example, camping and sleeping alone or with a partner, a blanket for your pet,...). Just like the thickness of a blanket, the size will have an impact on its weight, space and how easy it is to fold.
Color and style
The aesthetics of a waterproof blanket is something that's different for each person. Many different colors and patterns are available on the market so you should be able to find a blanket that fits your style, for sure.
Quality
The quality of a waterproof blanket is very important as well. More expensive blankets will often be more durable and reliable than cheap blankets. But the reason I've placed this factor last is because the previous decisions you made will ultimately decide the quality of the blanket in most cases. If you're buying a blanket for camping, it will be more durable than a dog blanket. Only when you have decided on all previous factors, will you have to choose between build quality. And in many cases the choice will be perfectly clear anyway.
Price
In the end, your choice might also be influenced by the amount of money you are willing to spend on a waterproof blanket. While I recommend buying a high-quality blanket for heavy activities or regular use, I would also like to add that buying a cheap blanket isn't a bad choice if you are 100% sure it'll only be used one time or a few times at best.
So before going to your local outdoor equipment store, think about these factors so you know which blanket to choose at the correct budget.

I love going to the park and having a nice picnic with the family, but I hate that feeling when you've been sitting for a bit and you can feel the moisture seeping though the blanket. I guess I will have to start looking at waterproof picnic blankets. Thanks for the tips.
